Baskets….

I love love love quick and easy projects once in a while…the inbetweeners I call them…you know when you are working on one or two or three bigger projects like a massive blanket or something more elaborate you need to break up the routine….quickies are also the perfect procrastinator….I’ve lost count of the WIPs lying around the house right now ….still… I had to make these two baskets….I think they are just perfect….big one for storing yarn and little one for small projects….

A grey hat…

this one for my hubby…a fast and simple project…the man hat …hope he likes it…he definitely needs it in this cold weather….a grey woolly hat is the perfect accessory for a man , don’t you agree?

November at the allotment…

not much to do apart from tidying up and doing those jobs that can’t be done when the plot is at full swing…more mulching, topping up and some sowing….

so….after consulting with the experts at the gardening fb forum I belong to I came to the conclusion that it was quite safe and bound to produce good results if I sowed broad beans this time of the year …who would have thought….mind you , the experts were split between sowing indoors or outdoors so I’m doing both…kind of an experiment and see what works best…

the idea is to get an early crop and then use the same beds for other spring vegetable…my ambition of using the plot all year round is starting to take shape…yay…

One day, one season, one year at a time…..I look back and I’m quite pleased with all I have achieved and learnt …feeling blessed….

Wishing you all a peaceful and productive week…

November at the allotment…

the sun was out this morning so hubby and I decide to do the last of the tidying up…….all raised beds are now topped up, mulched and weeded….only veg still growing are cabbages, leeks, parsnips and the overwintering garlic and cauliflowers….I’m in two minds about sowing broad beans now or waiting for the Spring….apparently doing it now it reduces the chances of diseases plus you get a much earlier crop….might give it a go one day next week weather permitting..

One raised bed at a time…

Today we have managed to put three of them to bed….weeded and topped up with compost…..come Spring the soil should be full of goodness….this year we are not covering any of the beds as we have done in the past….I’ve always being in two minds about it so I’m going to give the no covering method a chance and let the winter frost work its magic…..what I might do though is cover for a couple of weeks before planting to warm up the soil…..

Saving seeds…

in the past I have never trusted myself to do it….what if none of them germinate? what if I end up with none? What if……………well , things are starting to change….I now feel confident enough to start saving my own vegetables’ seeds….so far I have put away sunflower and pepper seeds and this morning I emptied out my last orange pumpkin …the runner beans that were left on the vine were ready too…insh’Allah next year I will be using quite a few of my own seeds…who knows perhaps one day I will not be relying on store bought seeds…..they do say that experience is the mother of all teachers……………………………………………………………………………

Gardening is definitely a long learning curve…..loving every second of it and in my books that’s what counts…..

Back from a mini break…

time away with family….time in what was once home….almost like travelling back in time….of course a lot has changed but also a lot has stayed the same….the views, the laid back pace, the long lunches…five days packed with good food, laughter, great excursions (Deba, Mutriku and Zarauz on the coast) mountain climbing, bike rides and family….

a great mini break but it is so nice to be back…I must confess I’m not a traveler…In fact, I hate travelling …..I’m home buddy…….I’m glad I went though…..

Wishing you all a peaceful and productive week…I’ll be busy at the allotment tidying up….
