One raised bed at a time…

Today we have managed to put three of them to bed….weeded and topped up with compost…..come Spring the soil should be full of goodness….this year we are not covering any of the beds as we have done in the past….I’ve always being in two minds about it so I’m going to give the no covering method a chance and let the winter frost work its magic…..what I might do though is cover for a couple of weeks before planting to warm up the soil…..

Saving seeds…

in the past I have never trusted myself to do it….what if none of them germinate? what if I end up with none? What if……………well , things are starting to change….I now feel confident enough to start saving my own vegetables’ seeds….so far I have put away sunflower and pepper seeds and this morning I emptied out my last orange pumpkin …the runner beans that were left on the vine were ready too…insh’Allah next year I will be using quite a few of my own seeds…who knows perhaps one day I will not be relying on store bought seeds…..they do say that experience is the mother of all teachers……………………………………………………………………………

Gardening is definitely a long learning curve…..loving every second of it and in my books that’s what counts…..

Back from a mini break…

time away with family….time in what was once home….almost like travelling back in time….of course a lot has changed but also a lot has stayed the same….the views, the laid back pace, the long lunches…five days packed with good food, laughter, great excursions (Deba, Mutriku and Zarauz on the coast) mountain climbing, bike rides and family….

a great mini break but it is so nice to be back…I must confess I’m not a traveler…In fact, I hate travelling …..I’m home buddy…….I’m glad I went though…..

Wishing you all a peaceful and productive week…I’ll be busy at the allotment tidying up….

But my proudest funnest moment has to be making mussels in brine….talk about going down memory lane…childhood memories flooding back….my mum would be so proud of me….Mejillones en escabeche to me is Sunday Lunch….while mum was frying the croquettes and checking on the roast we would feast on the mussels and stuffed olives….

They’re in…

today was the perfect day to plant the garlic…the sun was shining and quite warm…also perfect kind of day for tidying up the beds and adding well rotted compost ….

Our first time planting garlic but we have read up enough to know that they are very hungry plants…so after tidying up a raised bed of weeds we have added plenty of compost and then planted them 8 inches apart…little one has done a very good job of placing them with the little tail up….now all we have to do is let the Winter do its job…just mind that weeds don’t take residence in that bed…

We have also cleared another ¬†three beds and topped them up….slowly but surely….some harvesting has taken place too….our very last courgettes…gotta tidy up that bed next….and our very last melon….
